Why Our Instructors Don’t Have a Board During Beginner Lessons

If you’ve taken a beginner lesson with us before, you might have noticed our instructors aren’t carrying surfboards. It’s a deliberate choice designed to make your experience safer, easier, and way more fun!

Here’s why:

1. Boards are heavy, especially after a session
Our boards (9'0) can be awkward and heavy to carry on your own, particularly once you’re tired from being in the water. That’s why we always “sandwich” the boards and carry them with two people. One of the ways we’re here to help take the load off so you can focus on enjoying your time.

2. We’re there to help you navigate the ocean
Having hands free allows instructors to help control your board, guide you into the right position, and keep you steady, especially important when working with kids. Safety is always our top priority!

3. More connection, more encouragement
Surfing can be challenging when you’re learning something new. Not having a board means our hands are free to cheer you on and give high fives!

4. Keeping the group together
It’s surprisingly easy to drift along the beach without realizing it. Rip currents can slowly move you away from where you started. With hands free, instructors can clearly signal to the group, guide you back in, and help everyone stay close throughout the lesson.

At the end of the day, not having a board means we can focus 100% on you, your safety, your progress, and your experience in the water.

And that’s what it’s all about. 🌊
