Our History: The Sisterhood

Where Surfing Dreams Began in 1999

Surf Sister was founded with a simple yet powerful vision: to empower women in surfing and create a space where everyone feels welcome, confident, and at home in the ocean. With just a truck, a handful of boards, and a deep love for the sea, we set out to share the joy of riding waves and inspire others to do the same.

Today, Surf Sister has grown, but our heart remains unchanged. Inclusivity, encouragement, and community are still at the core of everything we do. Based in Tofino, our diverse and passionate team reflects the vibrant spirit of the town we call home.

Fueled by the support and enthusiasm of our community, Surf Sister has proudly been a pioneer in the surfing world. We were the first surf school in Canada to create progressive programs, international surf camps, and to establish a free local Surf Club. In 2010, we co-created Queen of the Peak, an all-women’s surf competition celebrating the incredible female surf talent of the West Coast. In addition, in 2024 we co-founded the Tofino Surf Lifesaving Club which is a non profit whose purpose is to educate and promote ocean safety by providing education, training and equipment.

Tofino is situated within the traditional territory of the Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation and in the heart of the Clayoquot Sound UNESCO Biosphere Region on the rugged west coast of Vancouver Island.

This former fishing village turned world-class surf destination, draws outdoor enthusiasts with its rare blend of wild beauty and adventure. Ancient rainforests meet windswept beaches, offering endless experiences—from surfing and whale watching to local cuisine and artisan shops. Though home to just 2,000 residents, Tofino supports nearly 400 businesses dedicated to welcoming visitors. Wildlife encounters are common, with sea stars, otters, sea lions, and migrating humpback and gray whales often making an appearance. Nearby, Pacific Rim National Park Reserve offers pristine beaches and lush coastal trails.

Renowned as a surf haven, Tofino is ideal for beginners and seasoned surfers alike. Its sandy beaches and varied breaks provide the perfect setting to learn, progress, and connect with the ocean.
