Adaptive Surf Lesson with Postcards From...

Postcards From is a Canadian travel series exploring the 5 senses; taste, touch, smell, sight and sound. In season 7 host Christa Couture takes viewers across Canada trying everything from tandem cycling, adaptive surfing, dragon boating and glassblowing.

Christa Couture is a Canadian author, musician, broadcaster, and filmmaker known for her storytelling. She became an amputee at age 12 after a rare bone cancer led to the amputation of her left leg above the knee. Her warm, curious approach focuses on authentic local stories and making travel feel welcoming and inclusive for everyone.

In Episode 8, Christa visits Tofino, where she kayaks through coastal waters, learns traditional cedar carving, and faces a longtime fear by trying surfing with us!

At Surf Sister, we've had the privilege of teaching a handful of adaptive surf lessons, and instructor Jess shared what goes into preparing for each one. Every adaptive lesson is carefully planned and typically involves two instructors to provide hands-on support in the water to ensure the best possible experience.

Preparation starts well before getting in the ocean. Equipment, wetsuit fitting, transportation to the beach, and water access all need to be considered. Tourism Tofino's beach wheelchair, pictured above, is an incredible resource that helps make the beach more accessible for both visitors and the local community.

The surf conditions are another key factor. Choosing the right beach and the best time for the lesson helps create a safe and enjoyable experience. Before every lesson, the instructors take time to get to know the participant, what motivates them to surf, what they hope to achieve, and what level of support they need in the water. From there, the lesson is tailored to meet their individual goals.

Jess and Kirsten had an amazing time sharing the waves with Christa and helping her experience surfing in Tofino!
