Surf Lesson FAQs
WILL WE GO IN THE WATER ON THE FIRST DAY?
WHAT IF IT IS RAINING?
Classes are held rain or shine and will only be cancelled if the wind is really blowing hard and/or conditions are deemed unsafe. If you are unsure about the weather, please call us prior to your class and we’ll let you know. If a class is cancelled due to the weather, we can reschedule it for another time or give you a gift certificate.
WHAT SHOULD I BRING?
You should bring your bathing suit, a towel, waterproof sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, drinking water, something to eat, and a dry change of clothes. You might also want to bring along some warm clothes. The weather on the West Coast is unpredictable, and the temperature can be quite a bit cooler near the water than it is inland. You will leave everything in your car so that it is available immediately following your lesson.
I’VE NEVER SURFED BEFORE AND I’M A BIT NERVOUS.
Surf Sister programs are designed with the beginner in mind. No surfing experience is necessary. As long as you can swim and feel comfortable being in the water, you can learn to surf! If you are still nervous, talk to us about it.
CAN I WEAR GLASSES OR GOGGLES?
You do not want to wear anything over your eyes for safety reasons. Contacts are a practical alternative if you wear prescription glasses.
WHAT IF I DON’T HAVE A VEHICLE?
Students are responsible for their own transportation to and from the beach, but we will transport the equipment. If you do not have a vehicle we can try to get you a ride with another student or call you a cab. In the summer there is a beach bus that runs out to the beaches every hour (www.tofinobus.com). Also there are bike rentals available in town.
What separates your surf school from the other surf schools?
Surf Sister Surf School has been operating since 1999 and over the years we have created programs and teaching techniques that are not only informative and safe, but also really fun. All our instructors adhere to the standards set by the BCASI and we are the only surf school in Canada to be certified by the National Surf Schools and Surf Instructors Association (www.nssia.org). The majority of our instructors have been employed at Surf Sister and teaching surfing for 5 or more years!!
